It's been an exciting summer for 12 Byrnes High School students! The rising Rebel Seniors were selected, along with several hundred others from across SC, to participate in the Palmetto Boys and Girls State programs. The annual programs were held June 5-11, with Boys State being hosted at Anderson University and Girls State at Presbyterian College. Both programs wrap up their weeklong sessions together in Columbia, SC at the State House.
Palmetto Boys and Girls State are citizenship and leadership training programs, created to educate outstanding high school students about state and local government. Students are nominated by their teachers at the local level. Students attending both programs are able to get a first-hand glimpse at government, by experiencing a simulation of political campaigns, elections and the political process. They also learn about the principals of citizenship and public service through a host of guest speakers, expert panels and staff members.
Byrnes High School sent a total of 7 Boys State delegates, and 5 Girls State delegates. They are: Samuel Beckley, Charles Carter, Matthew Crisman, Grayson McCalister, Hampton Slate, Ezekiel Stephens, Martin Trinh, Katherine Blackwood, Rebecca Brockman, Samantha Smith, Brookelyn White and Hannah Hall (alternate).
