As much of our community is still recovering from Hurricane Helene, District Five Schools has announced a plan for students and staff to return to school.
As of this weekend, all District Five schools now have power, and District Five administrators and staff are working hard to ensure everything is safe for students and staff to return.
After careful assessment and coordination with our District Five team, we have decided to reopen schools on the following schedule:
Monday, October 7 – Teachers and staff will return to school for preparation and planning. Also, this will allow additional time for power to be restored to homes, and for city and county crews to clear any remaining storm debris from our roads.
Tuesday, October 8 – All students will return to school, on a two hour delay
This delay will allow extra time in the morning to ensure safe travel for our buses, student drivers and families, as some of our roads across District Five still have debris from the storm.
The District Five transportation team is currently checking bus routes to make sure travel will be safe for all students. If any parents or families are still facing challenges, please reach out to your child’s school for support.
Parents and families: our team has put together additional advice and resources to help your children through this time. We know students may have a lot of questions after events like this storm.
Those resources can be accessed here in English, and are also available in Spanish, and Russian.
We understand that this may still feel overwhelming for some, but returning to school will help restore a sense of normalcy for our students, providing stability and routine during this challenging time.
We look forward to welcoming our students back to school and continuing to support our community's recovery.
