Spartanburg District Five is announcing an update to its academic calendar to account for instructional days missed due to Hurricane Helene. Students and staff missed a total of six school days—September 30, October 1-4, and October 7—due to widespread power outages and storm damage after the September storm.
State law requires all South Carolina school districts to designate at least three makeup days in their academic calendars each year. While the South Carolina legislature is still discussing whether it will forgive any additional missed days, District Five will move forward with two scheduled makeup days, which will now serve as eLearning days for students.
Updated Makeup Days:
Friday, February 14, 2025 – eLearning Day for students (previously a Staff Development/Makeup Day)
Friday, March 14, 2025 – eLearning Day for students (previously a Staff Development/Makeup Day)
On these dates, students will complete assignments from home, following guidance from their teachers. Schools will provide additional information regarding assignments, expectations, and technology support as the dates approach.
The third designated makeup day is still to be determined. District Five will communicate updates to families as soon as a final decision is made.
Why eLearning Days?
While adjusting the school calendar mid-year is never ideal, the use of eLearning days allows students and teachers to recover lost instructional time without adding extra days to the end of the school year.
We appreciate the patience and flexibility of our families as we work to make the best decisions for students and staff. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school.
Thank you for your continued support of Spartanburg District Five Schools!
