Spartanburg District Five Schools is pleased to welcome a new face to our leadership team, following official approval from our Board of Trustees.
Mrs. Tameka Irvin has been selected as District Five’s new Director of Health Services. She brings more than 25 years of nursing and leadership experience to the role, along with a passionate commitment to the health and wellness of students, staff, and families.
A licensed Nurse Practitioner, Irvin will join the District Five family after serving with Optum Health Care in Greenville since 2022, where she has provided both acute and chronic illness care for geriatric patients. Prior to her role at Optum, she served as a Nurse Manager and Nurse Practitioner for Spartanburg Regional Hospice. Her extensive career spans acute and primary care, hospice and palliative care at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, and clinical education. She began her nursing career in the Intensive Care Unit at Spartanburg Regional.
Importantly, Irvin also brings hands-on experience in pediatric and family-centered care. From 2019-2024, she served as a Nurse Practitioner and Director with Legacy Healthcare Advantage, where she supervised a team of 15 skilled nurses and developed individualized care plans for medically complex and fragile children. In this role, she also collaborated closely with community case managers to coordinate services and support for both clients and their families. Additionally, since 2019, she has worked with MEDCARE Urgent Care, providing comprehensive assessments and managing urgent care needs - including acute illnesses, minor injuries, and chronic condition exacerbations - for patients of all ages. This specialized experience uniquely equips her to support the complex and varied health needs of students in Spartanburg District Five, ensuring they receive compassionate, coordinated care that supports both their well-being and academic success.
Irvin earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of South Carolina Upstate, a Master of Science in Adult Gerontology from the University of Cincinnati, and her Post-Master's Nurse Practitioner Certificate from South University in Savannah, Georgia.
"I am so thrilled to be joining the District Five family and to build upon the great work District Five has already done to enhance student life and well-being," Irvin says.
A longtime District Five resident, Irvin has a personal connection to this community. "My kids were born and raised in District Five, so I've witnessed firsthand the district's commitment to excellence in both academics and wellness," she says. "I'm excited to serve in a district that puts such a high value on the health of students, staff, and the community."
Irvin will officially begin her new role on July 1, succeeding longtime Director of Health Services, Tammy Wilson, who will retire this summer.
